How to Get Court Records
Finding the custodian comes first. District Clerk Lana Warr keeps felony, civil, family, and other 132nd District Court files. County Clerk Melody Appleton keeps constitutional County Court records plus probate, guardianship, and mental-health matters. Each justice court and Snyder Municipal Court controls its own lower-court file. A shared courthouse or annex phone number does not combine Scurry County court records.
Online channels include the county's District Court calendar. re:SearchTX covers participating cases and documents. County Clerk EagleWeb covers official records, assumed names, marriages, and land records. EagleWeb is not a District Court case index. Try in person, by phone, or in writing. Then give the correct clerk the court, cause number, approximate date, document title, requested format, and delivery preference. The county publishes no universal mail, dropbox, bulk-download, or public-terminal policy. So confirm those options before sending material.
- Identify the court, case type, and responsible clerk.
- Use the calendar or re:SearchTX to locate the cause when helpful.
- Specify inspection, a plain copy, or a certified copy.
- Ask about search, copy, certification, postage, and special-service charges.
- Submit through the clerk’s confirmed counter, phone, email, or written-request process.
Four Scurry Record Custodians
The county's split matters more than a generic "call the clerk" instruction. The District Clerk handles the general-jurisdiction trial court. The County Clerk is a separate elected office with a different record set. JP1 and JP2 keep precinct matters. Examples include Class C offenses, small claims, evictions, and traffic cases within their jurisdiction. Snyder Municipal Court handles city ordinance and concurrent Class C matters. Its coverage runs inside Snyder.
| Record | Starting office |
|---|---|
| 132nd District felony, civil, or family file | District Clerk |
| County misdemeanor, probate, or guardianship file | County Clerk |
| Precinct Class C, small claim, eviction, or traffic file | JP1 or JP2 |
| Snyder city citation or ordinance file | Snyder Municipal Court |
A "we don't have that record" answer is not proof the file vanished. Check the issuing court instead. The case caption, citation, summons, or cause number often names the next office to try.
Types of Court Records
A Scurry County court record can take several forms. Event lists, case indexes, pleadings, orders, judgments, probate filings, and clerk-authenticated copies all qualify. The public district calendar is an event-focused snapshot. By contrast, re:SearchTX can expose case, filing, text, and hearing information where a participating court and security rules allow. The clerk file may hold documents that neither public view displays.
- Docket sheets, calendars, and hearing lists
- Petitions, answers, motions, and other pleadings
- Signed orders, judgments, and disposition documents
- Probate, estate, guardianship, and related county filings
- Ordinary copies, certified copies, transcripts, or appellate clerk records
EagleWeb adds official-record indexing, but its scope covers land, assumed-name, and marriage records rather than the 132nd District Court docket. Match the product to the request.
Three Scurry Record Products
Treat these as three distinct products. One is a docket snapshot, another an index result, and the third a clerk-issued copy. The snapshot tells you when a grouped court event was posted. The index helps identify a case, filing, document, or hearing. The copy supplies the requested item from the official file. Certification comes only with clerk authentication.
| Product | Best use | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar or docket PDF | Find a published setting | Not the full filing history |
| Case index or portal result | Discover a cause or document | Coverage and download limits apply |
| Clerk copy | Read or use the actual record | Fees, redaction, and access rules apply |
The search path in Scurry County case search can locate a cause before you request a copy. The clerk still controls the official product.
What a Court Record Contains
A full file can hold far more than the fields on a Scurry County court docket. District calendar samples list a cause field, case style, offense, attorney, bond, event label, date, time, and court instructions. Those fields identify a setting. Nothing more. They do not prove conviction. Nor do they show current bond status, a ruling on a motion, or the final outcome.
| Cause number | The court’s identifier, labeled DC. NO. on a district calendar sample. |
|---|---|
| Pleadings | Petitions, answers, motions, notices, or other filed papers. |
| Orders and judgments | Signed court action that must be read rather than inferred from a calendar label. |
| Docket history | Chronological entries or settings available in the official system. |
| Attachments or exhibits | Filed material subject to access, sealing, and redaction limits. |
Ask for a named document and an approximate filing date. A request for "everything" can be slower, less precise, and more costly than a focused one.
Scurry Probate Files Run Deep
County Clerk forms show what can sit behind a short docket entry. A guardianship annual account requests cause and reporting data. It also asks for receipts, disbursements, property values, claims, securities, oath information, and a bank certificate. A guardian report covers visits, residence, income, medical and social conditions, health, unmet needs, bond, and declarations. An inventory uses schedules. These cover real property, stocks, bonds, notes, cash, insurance, jointly owned property, other property, and claims.
The physician certificate asks for examination, diagnosis, prognosis, cognitive and decision-making information, and physician details. A blank form is public. That does not make a completed medical filing open to unrestricted viewing. That is why an index row cannot substitute for the underlying document. The clerk may also redact or withhold protected fields.
Certified Copies and Fees
A plain copy reproduces the available document. A certified copy carries clerk authentication. Downloading a calendar or printing an EagleWeb image does not create certification. Ask the receiving office what form it needs, then order that product from the custodian. Scurry County's probate schedule supplies specific County Clerk amounts. But it sets no universal price for every court record.
| Item | Published amount |
|---|---|
| County Clerk probate-schedule copy | $1 |
| Certified copy shown on that schedule | $5, displayed as $1 per page plus certification |
| re:SearchTX eligible public document | $0.10 per page, $1 minimum |
| Other search, delivery, or transcript work | Confirm with the responsible clerk |
Certified copies and fees: The County Clerk fee page links the civil, probate and guardianship, and 2024 schedules. Confirm current charges, postage, scanning, payment methods, and certification before you order.

EagleWeb Cannot Certify
Tyler EagleWeb, run by the Scurry County Clerk, makes official-record searching easy. It covers assumed names, marriages, and land records. But the service itself warns that its index is for convenience only and does not certify authenticity. So a screen image from a county-linked portal is still not a certified Scurry County court record.
When you need the actual item, write down the index details and ask the County Clerk for that exact instrument or filing. Want a 132nd District Court pleading or order instead? Route that request to the District Clerk. Keeping the two straight stops a land-record search from standing in for a court case search.
Public Access and Sealed Records
Texas handles access in layers. Government Code Chapter 552 sets a broad public-information policy. Yet the Texas Judiciary open-records policy makes clear that the Texas Public Information Act does not govern court case records the way it governs executive records. Instead, court files answer to common law, statutes, rules, court orders, and clerk procedures. Rule 12 covers certain judicial records on its own track. It sits apart from records used to decide a case.
Key access rules:
Texas Government Code Chapter 552 addresses public information but is not a universal court-case-record procedure.
Texas Rule of Judicial Administration 12 provides access rules and exceptions for covered judicial records.
Texas Rule of Appellate Procedure 21c materials identify sensitive data that must be handled with care.
Some material stays restricted or redacted: juvenile, family, child-related, mental-health, guardianship, sealed, and personally identifying records. Ask the clerk whether a public redacted version exists and what authority covers the withheld part.
Request Scurry Records Precisely
A precise written request works best. Try wording it like this: “I request to inspect or obtain a plain or certified copy of the named docket entry, order, or document in the identified court and cause number, filed or set near the stated date.” Say whether you want electronic or paper format. And ask the clerk to spell out copy, certification, delivery, or special-service costs before you pay.
